Thanks Darrin and Norm! I love his radio show on 88.9 (KRFC)! Keeping the old music alive!

I saw the Emma Malaby's Grocery Store when driving yesterday evening and wondered what happened to others like it. I will keep your map with me and note the "progress" that replaced these sites.

You know, the Chamber still uses the term "eminent domain" like it was a good thing. Seriously.

Kip W, and others: I'd love to see any old photos you have of FC. I moved here in 1995 and missed a lot of this culture.

I know this post is late in the game, but I just have to tell my story about Polly.

In the summer of 1984, my family and I settled down in Skin Gulch for the summer starting around the 4th of July. My spouse, Laurel, daughter Melissa, and son Ira pitched a tent and lived there until the first snow in October. We explored the canyon, found wonderful patches of wild raspberries and currants met Polly, but only after Melissa made first contact. After that first meeting, she would stop in from time to time to see how we were doing. One time when I was over in Greeley sub contracting for Bachmans, Melissa told her we were out of fuel for our stove and when I got back that evening Polly had brought down a gallon of Coleman Stove fuel.

We were homeless in the sense that we did not have a mailing address, no phone service and lived in a tent, but it was one of the best summers I have ever had, and I have seen 69 of them.

Melissa and Polly were the best of friends. And when we returned for several years after that, we would go and look for Polly at Melissa's insistence. Then one year, we could not find her and no one around us seemed to even know she existed. It is nice to know that this gentle woman who adopted us that summer in 1984 has found a new peace.

May the spirits of Skin Gulch ever be on the lookout for weary travelers with little girls to befriend.

Very interesting! I bought my grandparents house amd remembered my family talk about living in the basement for a few years and then my grandfather building the structure above. the neighbors told me grandma used to swing the hammer on projects during the day while grandpa worked during the nights. I recently found a few pictures of it being built, a few of the house and all of the documents about the build such as bills, blue prints and loan information. Crazy how much it cost to build vs what the house is valued at now. Thanks for this story.

Mr. JC,
I come to your comments more than 3 years later but you play so loose that a rebuttal is merited.

1. The state of Wyoming did not finance the Johnson County Cattle War.

2. The "war" did not occur at Wounded Knee in S.D.; instead in the region of Kaycee, Johnson Co, WY, some 300 miles to the west.

3. By 1890, there was no more frontier in the mainland United States unless you want to factor Arizona.

Thanks so much for this man. I cooked for the forest service/rolinsville station in '76. after a while, I moved down to Ft. Collins and used to catch Scott Bruning at the pump or on the second floor of some club/hotel? He was into doing some twisted, fun, entertaining stuff...just himself and a bunch of tape looped/layered stuff. As I recall I was pretty looped and layered myself. Great times. I have Scott's vinyl still...haven't heard it in decades but plan on doing it soon after having read this.
